Mouth Piece Storytelling – A Much Needed Update!

cropped-mouthpiecelogoonwhite1.jpg

Ah…it’s August already! Our apologies for being all quiet on the Mouth Piece front! Here’s what’s been going on…

THE EVENTS

June 30 – The Music Edition – was a complete and utter success! Held at Phog, we had full house, fabulous music, delicious cupcakes, and outstanding stories! I have loads of photos that I still need to post! Our Master Mouth Piece is Storyteller Jodi!

The next Mouth Piece event should take place in September…except…our host (that’s me!) is launching her new book of poetry and beginning a small but mighty book tour. Therefore, the choice has been made to not have another Mouth Piece event in September, and to wait until the Master Mouth Off event that will happen in early December. It is possible to have this event, however, it would add to an already packed and stressful month for our host, and likely, for everyone who will have wrapped up a hot summer and will be heading back to school, getting kids back to school, and/or feeling the heaviness and quiet joy at another season change.

The Master Mouth Off will be our first ever storytelling competition where the Master Mouth Pieces of the past year will compete for grand prizes. Over the next couple of months, much planning will go into this event to make it outstanding for all.

THE PODCASTS

This has been the most challenging part for us! In keeping with our commitment to recording each show live and creating podcasts for digital safe-keeping of all the stories until the end of time (!), which we have done, we still are behind in getting the podcasts produced and posted. It will become our main focus during the rest of the summer to complete the remaining three shows that need to get to podcast. Without a September event, we will use our time and energy to get these podcasts finished.

STILL WANT TO STORY TELL?

There are four incredible storytelling events that take place monthly just across that green-golden river in Michigan. Please stay connected to them and scoot over to attend and/or participate in any of these story telling events.

  1. The Moth – happens the first Thursday of every month at The Marble Bar. Hosted by Alex Trajano and produced by Patricia Wheeler of WDET, this is an outstanding story telling series that is a hot, hot ticket. It also takes place in Ann Arbor, hosted by the great Satori Shakoor, on the third Tuesday of every month at Circus.
  2. Homemade Stories with Shannon Cason – happens the last Monday of every month at Cliff Bell‘s in downtown Detroit. You’ve met him. You’ve heard his stories. Now join him in his storytelling series at Cliff Bell’s!
  3. The Secret Society of Twisted Storytellers – created and hosted by Satori Shakoor, this storytelling gift happens at various locations and times – and is always incredible!
  4. For local juiciness, I suggest going to a Windsor Poetry Slam event. Windsor’s Poetry Slam team is incredibly impressive, passionate, emotional and downright entertaining.

Thank you again for support and participation…and your beautiful patience!

The Podcast Update

So, it’s the end of July and I’m still working on getting the podcast from our Mouth Piece Kick-Off Mouth-Off event. #yikes

The good news is mama did some shopping and purchased some fancy gear for the next event (Thursday, September 10th, 2015!), and to help me make the podcast part of Mouth Piece as successful as the live events. I’m looking very forward to learning how to edit, record, insert music…and do all the fun things it takes to make a fabulous podcast that you’ll not only want to listen to, but that you’ll download and keep – and tell your friends to download and keep!

For inspiration, I’m listening to Definitely Not the Opera (one of my fav CBC radio shows), The Beginning of the End (WDET’s newest storytelling show hosted by the fabulous Alex Trajano) and Homemade Stories (Shannon Cason’s podcast).

I’ve got the fancy doodads, the computer system…now, I have to find the time and patience to learn and get.her.done.

All thanks to Long & McQuade – the music store with the mostess.vanheadphonesThis is me trying to look all cool as I listen to music and try to find the right theme music for Mouth Piece.

Thanks for your patience all. The podcast will up soon!

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the next Mouth Piece live event at Rino’s Kitchen! It’s still and forever will be FREE. So start thinking of your ‘Food’ related stories. #yum Show starts at 7:30pm SHARP. (whoa, I almost typed shart. That’s just wrong.)

What an outstanding event the Mouth Piece Kick-Off Mouth-Off was! Although at first the storytellers were a bit shy, they gathered their guts and stepped up to the stage to share honest, funny, heartfelt stories about BOOKS. Thank you!

Where do I begin? Villains Beastro was the perfect place to begin this storytelling journey. The staff was attentive and the venue was perfect! Stage? Check. Food? Check. Booze? Check! With over 50 people in attendance, there were cheers and hoorahs from the robust crowd. Many folks who are supporters of The Moth attended Mouth Piece to ‘see what it was all about’. And of course! We’re so happy you came! Social media and the *amazing* article in the Windsor Star promoting Mouth Piece did the job – got storyteller’s attention and attendance! Yahoo!

With the support of the Arts Culture & Heritage Fund grant Mouth Piece was granted, our kick-off Mouth-Off was a grand success! Storyteller Shannon Cason’s honest story about being a father opened the floor for more raw, heart-squeezing stories. We’re so thrilled Shannon came as our first Guest Storyteller! We are all fans! DJ Cam spun sweet music that kept us dancing in our seats…and a few brave souls even shook a booty on the dance floor as the scores were being tabulated (thank you Claire, Mouth Piece Math Goddess!!)

Thank you and high-fives to everyone who helped make this event so spectacular:

Villains Beastro, Shannon Cason, Suede Productions, Cameron Hucker, Corey Futko (the graphic artist who created our logo!), The Moth (our inspiration!), Cathy Masterson, Christopher Lawrence Menard, Arts, Culture & Heritage Fund, Grown Ups Read Things They Wrote as Kids family (Dan and Jenna!), Katie Hawkins (sound technician!), Claire Ferris, Emma Truswell (Blush Photography), DigiPrint, Marty Gervais, Sarah Jarvis (BookFest Windsor), Windsor Star, Beatrice Fantoni & Tyler Brownbridge, Raise A Reader, Nick, Jett & Miller Shields, and all the family and friends of the storytellers!

I bet you’re wondering, well, who the heck won this Mouth Piece event? Who is the Master Mouth Piece?!!

Thank you! Stay tuned for the podcast! For details on the next Mouth Piece storytelling event, see ‘Events’ or read this!

Shannon Cason, professional storyteller and comedic genius, will lead our storytelling, followed by 10 local storytellers. If you want to be one of the storytellers, you MUST fill out our form so we can put it in the basket and test your luck!

There will be a brief intermission after the first 5 storytellers. Each storyteller has 5 minutes to tell her story. No reading! No memorizing! And the story MUST BE TRUE!

For full storyteller info – CLICK HERE!

Yes, this is FREE EVENT and will continue to be a FREE EVENT because we at Mouth Piece believe that the oral tradition of storytelling is a given. We should be sharing stories with each other as often as possible. We’re here to foster this gift we can give to each other.

Of course, we couldn’t do this without our local supporters!

Each Mouth Piece event will take donations for the Raise A Reader program. Please bring in gently-used or new books – any genre, and we will promptly get them to the team!

As an added Kick-Off bonus, DJ Cam (was the DJ at Oishi back in the day!) will be spinning sick beats in between stories, during intermission, and after the Master Mouth Piece winner is announced. So prepare to stay and dance all night!
