Thank you to our lovely podcast guru Lauren Hedges for putting together the Home for the Holidaze Edition podcast!  I know it was awhile ago, but it’s worth the wait! Congratulations again to Storyteller Danah, our Master Mouth Piece! And thank you to all the storytellers: Alice, Cheryl, Collin, Melissa, Tracey, Abriel and Judy. Click here to see photos from the event…

Mouth Piece – The Love Edition – Photos!

Our apologies for taking a bit longer than usual to post these wonderful photos taken by the talented Emma Truswell of Blush Photos, but here they are! (It’s my fault, by the way, Emma gave me the photos a few days after the event! I’ve been busy!!)

I can still feel the powerful words of all the brave storytellers who shared at our Love Event…sticking to me like the best kind of smooth skin cream! Let’s let the photos tell a story now, shall we?

It’s  important to set the scene! Finding things to show ‘love’ was a fun endeavour. We tried out a new ‘sharing’ system – anonymous love notes – and it was a hit! Definitely going to continue this extra way of telling stories.

Your hostess-with-the-mostess Vanessa (that’s me!) gets things started. (Her/my sincerest apologies for the slew of bad words that proceeded to come out of my mouth during the show! I’ll work on that.)

Guest Storyteller John Wing (aka. comedian extraordinaire, and published poet! His new book of poetry ‘I’ll Be There Soon’ launches on April 5th! Details here!) shared the story of how he met his wife. Picture comedy shows, long drives, deserted hotels, dirty bedsheets…and true love in the making! Thank you John!

For the first time, we had 10 (yahoo!) brave people who shared their stories. Our goal is to have ten storytellers a show, so I hope we can keep the numbers up! Whether you were in the audience or on the stage though, you could feel the powerful love emanating from each storyteller!

Here are the Love Edition storytellers!

STORYTELLER KAREN

The first one up, Karen shared the story of how her hubby proposed. In the backyard. After he peed!

STORYTELLER MICHAEL

There are lessons to be learned from fish. Love lessons.

STORYTELLER JORDAN

Note to self: hanging out in front of the place the person you like works…might not be the best way to get her to like you.

STORYTELLER NATASHA

Natasha said what we all need to hear – that our love story with our selves is truly the most important. Thank you Natasha.

STORYTELLER BRYAN

One’s history, and the storytellers within it, can set a course of action in our lives. That’s what Bryan’s story taught us.

 STORYTELLER SAM

On saying ‘I love you’. Storyteller Sam shared a story filled with wisdom about the first time someone told her he loved…and, goats. There were goats in this story.

STORYTELLER ALEXANDRA

Featuring an ex-girlfriend…and a cat. Was there a goat in this story too?

STORYTELLER HANI

His was a broken heart love story. A necessary story on the theme of love. Thanks for being courageous and sharing Hani! (He was super nervous!!) *He also writer for The Lance student newspaper and wrote a fabulous article about the event! Double thank you Hani!)

STORYTELLER ASHLEY

Storyteller Ashley told a Tinder story. Ah, Tinder. There were bus drivers and exes…and certainly adventures!

STORYTELLER BENNY

Love is love. That was Storyteller Benny’s main message. He made us laugh (bathroom in a gay bar experience), and he made us think deeply and shed a tear.

And the MASTER MOUTHPIECE is:

STORYTELLER NATASHA!

MOUTHPIECE FEB 2016 LOW RES-63

Natasha won a fancy prize, and will move on to the Master Mouth Off later this year.

It’s true, we all have love stories, and these storytellers really opened their hearts to us. We are grateful! Everyone was so loving – the storytellers, the audience, the bar staff…It was truly a magical night. That’s the magic of storytelling, and why Mouth Piece exists. Let’s keep this love a flowin’! See you at the next event! Thank you the Foundry Pub family (we loved you so much, we’re going back for the next Mouth Piece!), DJ Cam, Emma and Ken, Nick, and my family,Suede (our sponsor!), and to our special sponsor Spotvin Creative!

New URL! Shorter! Easier! Mouth Piece-e-er!

The Podcast Update

So, it’s the end of July and I’m still working on getting the podcast from our Mouth Piece Kick-Off Mouth-Off event. #yikes

The good news is mama did some shopping and purchased some fancy gear for the next event (Thursday, September 10th, 2015!), and to help me make the podcast part of Mouth Piece as successful as the live events. I’m looking very forward to learning how to edit, record, insert music…and do all the fun things it takes to make a fabulous podcast that you’ll not only want to listen to, but that you’ll download and keep – and tell your friends to download and keep!

For inspiration, I’m listening to Definitely Not the Opera (one of my fav CBC radio shows), The Beginning of the End (WDET’s newest storytelling show hosted by the fabulous Alex Trajano) and Homemade Stories (Shannon Cason’s podcast).

I’ve got the fancy doodads, the computer system…now, I have to find the time and patience to learn and get.her.done.

Headphones – a necessary tool for both the live and podcast show. microphones

Get ready to speak into a fancy new microphone, y’all. (I get to use it too to record intros/etc. for the podcast.)stand

My very own mic stand and cables! gear

All thanks to Long & McQuade – the music store with the mostess.vanheadphonesThis is me trying to look all cool as I listen to music and try to find the right theme music for Mouth Piece.

Thanks for your patience all. The podcast will up soon!

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the next Mouth Piece live event at Rino’s Kitchen! It’s still and forever will be FREE. So start thinking of your ‘Food’ related stories. #yum Show starts at 7:30pm SHARP. (whoa, I almost typed shart. That’s just wrong.)

What an outstanding event the Mouth Piece Kick-Off Mouth-Off was! Although at first the storytellers were a bit shy, they gathered their guts and stepped up to the stage to share honest, funny, heartfelt stories about BOOKS. Thank you!

Where do I begin? Villains Beastro was the perfect place to begin this storytelling journey. The staff was attentive and the venue was perfect! Stage? Check. Food? Check. Booze? Check! With over 50 people in attendance, there were cheers and hoorahs from the robust crowd. Many folks who are supporters of The Moth attended Mouth Piece to ‘see what it was all about’. And of course! We’re so happy you came! Social media and the *amazing* article in the Windsor Star promoting Mouth Piece did the job – got storyteller’s attention and attendance! Yahoo!

With the support of the Arts Culture & Heritage Fund grant Mouth Piece was granted, our kick-off Mouth-Off was a grand success! Storyteller Shannon Cason’s honest story about being a father opened the floor for more raw, heart-squeezing stories. We’re so thrilled Shannon came as our first Guest Storyteller! We are all fans! DJ Cam spun sweet music that kept us dancing in our seats…and a few brave souls even shook a booty on the dance floor as the scores were being tabulated (thank you Claire, Mouth Piece Math Goddess!!)

Thank you and high-fives to everyone who helped make this event so spectacular:

Villains Beastro, Shannon Cason, Suede Productions, Cameron Hucker, Corey Futko (the graphic artist who created our logo!), The Moth (our inspiration!), Cathy Masterson, Christopher Lawrence Menard, Arts, Culture & Heritage Fund, Grown Ups Read Things They Wrote as Kids family (Dan and Jenna!), Katie Hawkins (sound technician!), Claire Ferris, Emma Truswell (Blush Photography), DigiPrint, Marty Gervais, Sarah Jarvis (BookFest Windsor), Windsor Star, Beatrice Fantoni & Tyler Brownbridge, Raise A Reader, Nick, Jett & Miller Shields, and all the family and friends of the storytellers!

I bet you’re wondering, well, who the heck won this Mouth Piece event? Who is the Master Mouth Piece?!!

The June Master Mouth Piece is Greg!!

And now…please scroll and enjoy this visual essay featuring photographs taken by the talented Emma Truswell of Blush Photography.

Thank you! Stay tuned for the podcast! For details on the next Mouth Piece storytelling event, see ‘Events’ or read this!

What’s your story?

Mouth Piece Makes the News!

cropped-mouthpiecelogoonwhite1.jpg

Thank you to the Windsor Star, writer Beatrice Fantoni and photographer Tyler Brownbridge, for this incredible article on Mouth Piece Storytelling!

It was a wonderful process from start to finish! And we had some good laughs, Tyler and I, when he came to the house to take a photo. There were four kids, the dog and, ahem, absolutely no blank walls! We made it work! As silly as it feels to be in front of the camera (mama’s favourite is behind it!), Tyler snapped a sweet shot.

Thank you Windsor Star for covering local news – and helping cultivate this much-needed oral tradition!

NEWS ALERT! MOUTH PIECE RECIPIENT OF ACHF GRANT!

cropped-mouthpiecelogoonwhite1.jpg

We are thrilled to announce that Mouth Piece Storytelling is the recipient of an Arts, Culture & Heritage Grant, offered by the City of Windsor’s Culture Department! We put loads of time and effort into the grant application in hopes that we would get some financial help for our Kick-Off Mouth-Off event – and we did!

Thank you so much ACHF team and the City of Windsor!
